My visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art

During my visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I was very impressed by one of world largest and most encyclopedic collections of art. For instance, you can find ancient Greek and Roman artefacts sitting with 20th century French impressionist masterpieces.  The Met is undoubtedly the star attraction in New York. In addition, the Met has one of the finest works of European art and the finest collection of Egyptian art. The American Wing is another important part of the museum that contains paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts including 24 rooms that explain American history and domestic life. The Met has the great potential to be a playground for the imagination.

I went to the museum with a very special person to me, my daughter and I think it was a major step for the education of my baby because I want her to be a great professional and I think that art is a very important part in the formation of an individual. When we got to the museum there were many people in line to enter. First time in a world-class museum and the attention was also world class. I felt very small in the museum because it is huge and impossible to see in a few hours. I think that a museum of this significance should visit all possible days. First, I was a little disoriented but the employees are very knowledgeable and friendly. I received information about the museum at the entrance and so began my journey in world class art .I think as I was with my daughter everyone wanted help making the experience prettier. There are current maps, signs, guides because it is impossible to make the trip just wondering. One thing that caught my attention were definitely the prices were very high but people paid no matter the price. I was a bit nervous before getting tickets because there was no information about the suggested donation. The first thing I told the cashier is I'm an art student and I would like to pay the donation and the cashier was fine with it.The museum has a collection so vast, one thing that caught my attention fie Egyptian art. The statue of the entrance gave me an idea of the experience .I always liked Egyptian art but there are many things like paintings, ceramics, objects, statues, rare objects and more. The way  the museum is presented is very professional and helpful. Every time I went into a room was a new emotion for so much genius artist. All objects had their labels with the information and while there were people in charge of giving information as a kind of history and art.

The first art classes with Professor Dahlia were very fundamental because we were taught how to analyze art .I started to move in the museum using the map even though sometimes I got loss this was part of the challenge. The lightning in the museum is perfect, the color of the rooms contrasts with the paintings. For example the Renaissance rooms are dark and that gives the feeling of being at that time which is vital for the experience. Art objects have their human and physical protection.  I said human because of the security guards. They were worry a lot about my daughter getting to close to objects.

Art  presented in the museum requires the relative importance of the analysis using formal, stylistic, biographical and historical. Reading the labels was very important because we cannot know the historical reason, biographical, stylistic of the work without them. The first painting I liked was The Entombment Oil on Canvas by the Italian Alessandro Bonvicino 1554. I think that I liked this painting because I saw a film about the Passion of Christ one day before my visit and that made me pay more attention to religious art. The label was very important because this painting was an altarpiece that means it was in a church in Italy and the artist painted this painting before his death. This is something incredible. The label says "Christ obedient even unto death Become". The way the artist depicts the sadness of the people who followed Jesus with the sad landscape and totally lifeless  Christ  is definitely an artwork. This painting is huge so it is important to see it from afar to appreciate better .This painting reminded me of the churches of my country that has all this kind of medieval art.

This next painting is an acrylic on canvas by the Italian Lorenzo Lotto. Venus and Cupid with approximately date in the mid-1520s.The details in the painting are extraordinary. This reminded me when I used to work in Pratt Institute and I saw some art students trying to draw a naked woman. Draw a naked woman in Renaissance times must have been something very complicated and more if the woman is in front of a child. Greek mythology play an important role in this painting because the child is the God of love Cupid and Venus is the goddess of beauty, love and fertility. The scene is dominated by the figure of Venus wearing a magnificent tiara, earrings and bridal veil; conch, pink, with petals that look freshly fallen on her lap, and myrtle are the classic symbols that identify the goddess. Many other details of the surrounding environment refer to love and fidelity: red fabric, ivy, myrtle wreath and censer hanging from it. To the left of the composition, gesture Cupid peeing through the crown of myrtle is a sign of fertility and good luck. Moreover, the artist achieved admirably capture the impertinent and malicious expression of Cupid and the snake on the blue mantle. Fertility was represented by a serpent in ancient civilizations. The Renaissance’s painting and the gold leaf frame make a powerful combination that highlights the work of a genius.

In conclusion, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a treasure house that testifies the successes and failures of humanity and beautiful art made forever.

  1. I love that you took your daughter! Good work using the labels to get a better analysis of the works, and adding the historical information to your own ways of viewing.
