The Chelsea's Galleries

On June 1st, I went to Chelsea to visit the multiple art galleries located in the area.
It was such a great experience. I  got to see a lot of contemporary art. Artists told they stories using different mediums, some used nature, some used films, some reproduced nature... really it is limitless and the range of styles was very interesting to witness. I told myself many times that I should get going but  I always felt compelled to look for another gallery... This class makes me realize that I am into art more than I knew it myself. Each trip that we took grew my interest and curiosity about art and certain artists.

Jim Kempner Fine Art

Coming out the train, this is the first gallery I encountered. I seen it couple weeks ago and just looked through the windows thinking it wasn't ok to just walk in. Though, the 3D outdoor installation was new. It is a work from Andy Rosen called UNPACK made from PVC, Synthetic fur, foam and wooden in 2015.

This portrait of the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat
is an oil on primed magnet painted by John Grande, 2016.
Tina Kim Gallery

In Tina Kim Gallery there was an exhibition by the artist Park Chan-Kyong from Seoul. Entering the first room, it was very dark and movies were played on the walls. It was Power Passage (2004-7), an award winning installation that includes a two channel video, three images on panel and a wall text. in a second room there was photographies. This artist used multi-media and interactivity in his work, which refer to some of the definitions of the contemporary art.

Kravets/Wehby Gallery

In this Gallery was exposed the work of Stan Narten. The exhibition was called World Eater

Underlow, 2016. Oil on linen

Darkness Unfold, 2015. Oil on
linen

                               Paula Cooper Gallery

Two artists were featured at the two different location of this gallery.Bruce Conner and Meg Webster.
At first place, I looked at the work of Bruce Conner.
This painting is called Mary anointing Jesus With the Precious Oil of Spikenard, 2003 and is a cotton jacquard tapestry.

Meg Webster finds inspiration in the intrinsic beauty of natural materials.Using metal, glass and organic elements, the artist creates large scale installations.
On this picture is Solar Grow Room, 2016
4 raised wooden planters with grass, flowers and other vegetation, off grid solar powered electrical system.
Here is an exemple of how in contemporary art the barrier between everyday life and art can be put down.
Gladstone Gallery

In the Gladstone Gallery was an exhibition of the artist Anish Kapoor. That sculpture was HUGE, so big it felt intimidating and a bit scary, it truly made me feel a little uncomfortable to approach it too much at first. The work is called She Wolf, 2016. It is made of resin, earth and marble. The artist using earth to realize his work is unconventional, one of the characteristic of contemporary art.

To conclude, I enjoyed my time in the galleries, I'll definitely go back but the art was everywhere, including the street. Our Art class pushes us to have a more artistic eye and it is amazing to notice how New York City itself is an Art Gallery.
This building was so pretty

The artists were busy painting this huge mural and FYI I went to Empire Diner (right under)one day after visiting the High Line and they have the BEST Banana split! ;-)

See you!!
