Blog Post #4

The art work I chose was by William Zorach that dates back to 1914. My interpretation of his painting was a nude man and woman who are surrounded by nature. We can clearly see trees, flowers, birds and also the couple seem to be the center of the painting and are also in the middle of the trees and behind them a heart shape or something similar to it. The painting reminds me of Adam and Eve from the bible. The couple seem to be in a loving and peaceful embrace. The feeling I get from the painting is happiness, peace and security. Maybe the painting is supposed to potray the way the artist felt being surrounded by nature. Being in the free open air surrounded by trees, flowers, people, and beautiful skies is what inspired him to create the painting the way he did. Maybe he closed his eyes and that is what popped in his mind. The painting is called “Spring in Central Park (recto); Three Figures (verso) which in the website of the Met it mentions the artist “painted at home from imagination…in all wild colors, peopled with exotic nudes” and that how he depicted New York City’s Central Park. He also had a wife who was also a painter. Maybe in the painting its him depicted along with his wife nude in the park and surrounded by nature and at peace and loving each other. Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine and site: http://www.portlandmuseum.org also mentions that William and his wife Marguerite use to sketch all over the city like Central Park and along the waterfront. Once they went home they let their imagination loose and painted what came to mind and created a unique work of art. William and his wife both had similar styles and techniques. William’s wife has also a similar painting to his Spring in Central Park and his wife has the “The Garden” by Marguerite Zorach dated 1914. They both loved and shared the passion for art but they also expressed their love of nature by depicting humans living in harmony just like William did in “Spring in Central Park.” I can also say now that they loved working together and shared ideas along as they created their art works. If they were able to work and live together I can safely say that they really did live in harmony just like William’s painting in 1914.

  1. This is so fascinating to see both the husband and wife's paintings alongside each other! Very good work in trying to understand the choices the artist made!
