Form, Type and Style in a 700 Wall

MadC - 700 (2010) Wall  Women's Forum Street Art Project
I chose this painting because it truly fascinated me. The degree of complexity is enormous and it includes all the elements discussed in class. This is a seven hundred square-meter wall graffiti by German artist MadC finished in 2010 after four months of hard and single work that is something very remarkable.

First, the German artist MadC uses multiple forms in the 700 wall. She uses natural forms like the ocean, the octopus, the sky with a variation in colors. In addition, the artist uses geometric forms of expression like the group of  letters, the buildings, the laboratory, and the machine that I believe is the best expression of geometric forms. There is a collision between the real world and the graffiti world or we can say a collision between natural forms and geometric graffiti forms as we can see it in the painting. The artists uses linear perspective from different angles to give 3D dimension in a 2D surface. For instance, the lab and the port with the boats coming from behind the horizont line.

Second, MadC uses all the visual elements for the wall. For example, we can see vertical lines in the machine  that give that sensation of strength and horizontal lines in the train that give calm to the landscape behind. We have multiple types of borders like the letters and implied borders like the ocean border line with the dark sky. The space in the whole painting is very positive but the painting have a few negative spaces that are used to give that 3D effect .

Finally, MadC uses the colors in a extraordinary way. As we can see we have pure, analogous, primary, secondary and complementary colors.

Clash of Titans
This part of the wall is a clear example of brothers and sisters colors. We have the cold blue with some analog variations that represents the tsunami wave against the warm orange with some analog variations that represents the tsunami graffiti wave. The empty space between the two waves is the ocean foam  result of the clash between these two analogs colors. It also separates the sky from the ocean. Moreover, the artists emphasizes complementary colors like the blue and the orange to bring attention to her masterpiece.

Texture and Patterns
In this part of the wall, we have the combination of texture and pattern. Texture and pattern are represented by the windows in the building's wall. We said texture because the surface in the wall changes automatically in that section and we said pattern since the windows are repetitive and they have same form, color and arrange.

In a nutshell, this masterpiece includes all the crucial art elements product of a genial woman's mind and it's the representation that our mind has no limits.

  2. Gustavo, this is a great choice and you wrote really well and clearly about the use of color, shapes and other elements. Good observation of how the negative space gives a more dimensional look- especially noticeable in the orange/sunset cityscape.
