Blog Post #2

The title of this art is The Innocent Eye Test, by Mark Tansey who is an American. He was born in 1949 and he draw this piece in 1981. In this painting, the cow is looking at the picture of the bull and the human experts are watching whether the cow can distinguish artifice from reality.

As you can see this painting is black and white. However, it has a value which gives a tonal ranges, from light to dark. You can see where the light is coming from through the value. It is coming from the left side of the piece. It is because the value of the picture goes dark to light from the right side to the left side of the art. Also, you can see the overlapping which is the placement in a composition of one object in front of another in order to create the illusion of depth. For example, in this art, the cow is looking at the bull in the picture. The cow is overlapped to the picture that has a bull in it. This shows the viewers the size and distance in paintings. In this case, cow is in front of the picture with the bull in it and the cow is near to where the artist is drawing the art. Moreover, when you look at the people on the left side and the right side, the people on the left side is drawn smaller compared to the people on the right. This shows the relative size or scale to distinguish relation to another which makes the art more realistic. The contour line is a line that outlines the shape of an object, simply showing the shape with an even light weight. In this art, contour lines can be clearly seen. Especially the contour of the cow and the men on the right side is more clearly seen than the left side of this art. This shows how far away the people on the left side is. The foreground, middle ground, and background of the three areas can be found in this art which emphasizes the mass and volume of the objects in the art. The foreground which is the nearest place where the artist might be is where the shadow of the cow is. The background can be the two people are standing in the left side of the art within the blank white wall.
