A teenager room's

“The Magic Room” (1994) by Patssi Valdez. It is acrylic on canvas.

This painting really makes honor to its name because makes you feel you are in a surreal world. Although it has a representational style, in my opinion I could say it has a touch of abstract style. This painting represents a typical home scene like a dinning room, but does it in a surreal way, like something you won’t see in the real world.

One of the things I love from this art is that is colorful and full of different geometric shapes. We can observe vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, which ends in a beautiful mess. Why I say beautiful mess? Because each type of line has a different emotional impact, but we can observe that in this paint all 3 types of lines merge together in harmony to make the “magic.”

The diagonal line, are the ones that makes the room looks like everything is moving (the chairs, glasses, forks, the rings in the ceiling, etc.). The horizontal lines in the cone and the shadow under the green and blue stuffs make me feel calm.
There are some geometric shapes, but the most standings are the circle, the rectangle and the triangle, some of them looking 3D. Also there are patterns everywhere. The floor (or rug) have a spiral shape pattern all along its surface which also match with the white napkins that seems they are unfolding themselves. There are four balls or spheres, although it looks like more like one ball bouncing (four to represent the path that the ball followed).

I could suggest the painting is strongly illuminated, a light from above It expands
throughout the room, we can observe it for the kind of shadows that it produces (just below
the objects). The artist added a great range of shades that make the painting looks more
captivating.

Primary and secondary color are used, and they suggest that this room is a happy
and warm place compared with the outside world which appears be a cold night. The most
standing colors are red, orange, and yellow in their variations. Cold colors are used too, to
add a complement effect in the painting, green and blueto be specific (direct complements
of red and orange).

  1. Excellent work Gabriel! The lines are so important in this work- the visible ones and the implied ones. And yes, the use of shapes and color are very dramatic here.
