My intro

My name is Monica Luna-Serrano born in Mexico but have been living in  NYC for almost my entire life. I have a family of my own with a daughter of 13 and a boy of 11. They both are my reason for living and the reason why I decided to continue my education. My daughter is in to ART and i want to understand and learn about Art so that i can help, understand and allow her to reach her dreams of becoming an artist or a fashion designer. me on the other hand have no artistic bone in my body. But with this course I want to learn about art and experience what she will be confronting in that particular field. My major at LAGCC is Criminal Justice and the next semester I will be attending John Jay. Hope to graduate soon and be the first in my family to have a degree or attend college. I want to make my family proud and encourage my children and demonstrate to them the importance of school.

INTRODUCTION

Hi, 

I am Alain Zoma. I am a student at Laguardia Community College and I study civil engineering. This is my fourth semester at the college, and I believe that Laguardia is a great college, even I have not experienced so far other colleges in New York or in other states. The education in my view is very qualitative and I have never complained about. Moreover the social integration of students is exemplary. As an immigrant from Burkina Faso, a country in West Africa, I have perceived Laguardia as my first interface of integration in the United States. I have met great teachers, good friends and great opportunities. Some students may have encountered difficulties at Laguardia and may disagree, but for me, this was definitely the best place I could have started.

As a student in the spring 2016 honor Art class, I have to say that this is not my first Art class. I have completed in 2010 a bachelor degree in Architecture from the International African School of Architecture and Urban planning (EAMAU). So I have taken some Art classes in the past. However, I still have lots of expectations from this class, because we never stop learning. One of the main questions I have always asked about Art is how one becomes a great artist. Nowadays, with the proliferation of Art as a subject taught in schools, many would say that we learn to become an artist. Nevertheless, I believe that there is a lot to do with natural abilities. I remember that in my Art class in EAMAU, honestly I was doing well, but I was struggling and giving so much effort. Moreover, I never felt that I have the insight of Arts. On the contrary I had some fellow students who I believed were born artist. They were genius. We may argue that they had worked it out during their younger age, but the different is that those students they had the insight of Arts, they were very talented, and they produced anything without almost any effort. I believe that for those people, there is something to do with natural gifts. About myself, even as a professional in Architecture, I have always consider myself more as a technician, a scientist, a mathematician, a physicist rather than an artist. This is even the reason why I have decided to study also Civil Engineering. My expectation from this class is the answer to the question how to become an artist. Will I have the belief at the end of this class that one can become a great artist just by learning in school or wherever?

I have worked in my country two years as a professional architect. If architecture can be considered somewhat as an artistic discipline, there are still a lot of constrains that restrain architects in their design process. They can be financial, environmental, legal restrictions, etc. The two pictures illustrate an example of a project I have designed, and that has evolved from a big and ambitious project to a much smaller project due to financial limitations. This is a hotel project. The first picture was the model of project desired by the costumer, but the final project was the second one due to the budget available to the costumer.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Jasmine. I am a student here at LaGuardia entering my 3^rd semester with the school. Currently I have enjoyed my time here at LAGCC and meeting the amazing people and professors I have had the privilege to work with. This is will be my first official art course as a student, I am excited to see what the class holds for me and what I will take away from it.

                I think my first interactions with what I consider “art” happened at a young age. My parents, both of Puerto Rican descent and 2^nd generation Americans spent their teenage years during the 1980’s in New York City. My father was a graffiti artist who always had his work up throughout the house growing up. He was very much so into street art and had an insane collection of comic books which I believe inspired his style of drawing. I believe my taste in art has definitely been sculpted by my experiences with street art growing up but hopefully after this course there will be some new styles I have developed an appreciation for.

I have attached a picture of  “Tuxedo” by Jean-Michel Basquiat which I had the awesome experience of seeing in person at the Brooklyn Museum last summer while they had the “Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks” exhibit available for viewing.

My name is Zihao, you can also call me Zi. I come from China, my major is Computer science. To be honest, I do not like Art, and this is course can consider as my first art course in my life, but sometime I like to do thing I do not like, and to make myself like it.

Hi, my name is Munkyung Kim (Moon). I from South Korea, and grew up in Japan. I came to the U.S by myself to study 3 years ago. My personality is very friendly, and love to conversation with people. My hobbit is watching movie, playing sorts and coloring. Since I was a little, I always like to draw, and create something because I can feel relax through these actives. I used to go painting class when I was 8 years old, and I got a lot of awards. However, I don’t have time to draw these days, so I don’t have confidence to draw a great painting. I believe that, drawing does not have clear answer, and we can create with drawing whatever we imagine. That’s why I love painting.

Because of I lived in 3 different countries, I have been seen many kinds of arts. However, I love to use colors because I can feel strong expressions, feelings, and emotions trough many kind of colors. Moreover, I never feel board to see many colors! That's why I'm looking forward to paint in this class.

My favorite art is Japanese arts. Since I grew up in Japan I have been seen a lot of awesome arts in the country. I like these arts because they have back ground of history, and deep meanings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

    In continue, people can connect with other people through the arts even though they use different languages, and have different cultures. I also think that painting is a way of communication because people can see the back ground of the arts, and read their behind of story. That's why I want to improve to show my expressions through the arts. Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Jonathan Morales. I have lived in New York City all my life and I am currently a Liberal Arts: Math and Science major. This is my third semester at LaGuardia. I’m taking Intro to Art specifically to sustain my academic writing abilities and to balance with the math courses I’m taking. Currently, I am focused on building a strong, versatile transcript for transfer possibilities. This will be the third art-related class I’m taking. In my first semester, I took Art & Society with Prof. Elsayed and thought the course structure was well done and engaging. The blogging aspect kept students directly involved throughout and I enjoyed comparing and contrasting opinions. I’m glad the structure is more or less the same for this course. Personally, I haven’t found what interests me career-wise, but I’m not in a rush to find out. My hobbies are tame: I read, I study, I swim, and I write. Art is a strange thing. The Romantic period is inspirational, and my eyes will always admire Modern art. However, Contemporary art gives me this notion of pretentiousness and falsity. Either way, I will always love art and the experiences it can create. Viewing or making art is so personal, almost intimate. I have visited every museum in the city (even the Museum of American Finance, sadly) and every other week I try to find a fresh gallery to visit. I have always been slightly intimidated of drawing or painting in a class setting, so I’m excited to actually be making something and sharing it with others. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and having an enjoyable semester. We all have meaningful perspectives to share!

I am Kimiko

Hi you guys ! My name is Kimiko Bee-Hollis. My major is business administration but I have such a strong interest in art and music. I've been into art since I was in elementary school. My best friend got me into anime and drawing; therefore, art has been apart of my life since then. This explains why I'm in an art class with a business administration major.
My other interest is music. I am a singer, piano player, and an assistant for an A&R at MBK Entertainment (a record label). Due to this, my spare time is spent in church where I do my singing and other vocal activities. I love the summer, coffee, working out, and Netflix. Below is a little sample of my art !

I started having great interest in art after I came here because there are a lot of opportunities to see arts in NYC and I can see them without paying a lot of money. I like going to museums and galleries. I like The Met, The Frick collections, The Cloisters and Moma. My hobbies are doing yoga, watching movies, drinking, eating and practicing painting.

Hey everyone!

I'm Nathalie Messier, 20 years old. I'm a Creative Writing major and really enjoy reading books (particularly fiction), as well as writing; but I also love making art and I have somewhat of a passion for design. Basically, I love having the chance to flex my creative muscles, which is partially why I took this class.
While creating something is certainly a lot of fun, I'm also interested in the process behind it, and I feel like that's something I could benefit from learning more about. Sometimes, as a writer and artist, I focus too much on the end product and don't bother paying attention to the journey, which is equally as important;  I'm hoping this class will give me a little more perspective in that regard.
Oh, and if you're wondering, the picture to the left is one I took while inside the MET museum. My mom and sister actually both work there, and I'm so incredibly jealous of all the art they get to look at all day.
I'm admiring a giant clam shell on the right. It's inside the ocean exhibit in The Museum of Natural History, which is a really awesome museum. The ocean exhibit in particular is my favorite (though I'm pretty biased--I have a HUGE obsession with marine life).
I'm excited to join you all in class!

 

Hi everyone, my name is Marley Marcela Hernandez, I’m 20 years old  and I live in East Elmhurst near La Guardia airport. I was born in Colombia, I been living In the United States for almost 10 years and like many of you guys, I came to this country with many aspirations and dreams. I have my mom,  my older sister and my twin sister living here, but the rest of my family is in Colombia.  My major is criminal justice, but In the future I’m planning of becoming more than just a cop, maybe part of the FBI or CIA. For hobbies I Love going  swimming, since I was very little I started swimming and is something I really enjoy, other than that I love spending time with my family.
  I really admire art, this is why I enrolled in this class. The picture bellow was taken in Medellin, Colombia. It  represents a sculpture from Fernando  Botero, who is considered  the most recognized and quoted living artist from Latin America. Fernando Botero is well known for creating bloated, oversized paintings of people, animals and elements of the natural world.

 I am honored to present to you this famous artist, since he represents my country and this makes me feel proud because all of his paintings are seen all over the world.

Introductory Blog Post

Hi. My name is Eun Jin Park from South Korea. I came to the states two years ago and I'm experiencing a lot things. One of the most interesting thing is seeing and being able to know about many different people from all over the world. I love going to Brooklyn and going to live music bar. I also like to go to art museums, jazz bar, orchestra, and many other places to have fun! Most recently, I went to MOMA and one of the art that I had fun was watching a video called "Scenes for a New Heritage". It was a video collaborated with narrator explaining by doing rap. I'm really excited to take art class to know more about art and nice to meet you guys!

My name is Gabriel Ponte-Fleary. I am from Venezuela. I am Hard of Hearing but I identify myself as Deaf.

This is my last semester at LAGCC, my major is Photography. I am really passionate about it. I also love listen to music (yeah some Deaf can hear music, loud, though), read, hang out with my friends, and sleep.

I have great expectation about this class. I like drawing, but more as a hobby (I need a lot practice). But I hope this class helps me to improve a little bit more this skill and gives me a new perspective of art.

Victor's art

Hi guys. My name is Victor (37), I was born and raised in Croatia; immigrated to the states 15 years ago. Since I love going to MET museum, this class is crucial for me to learn how to approach art. It's not as intimidating as the first time I went there, but I didn't make much progress in all those visits. Have you guys ever been to Guggenheim museum? There was a painting by Pablo Picasso (yes, he has normal art as well -lol) of people mingling in a bar in 1920s or so. The painting looked alive. The people, the smoke from their cigarettes - everything looked so vivid. I could hear their laughter. That's the first time I understood the power of art, and why would anyone pay a fortune to have it. I think it was marked with estimated evaluation of $1.5M ! I love going to the section with furniture where experts who work in a museum re-created the living spaces of the houses and castles of the nobles so we can get a small glimpse how they used to live. Sculptures are something I “don’t get” so definitely have to work on that. And yes, I spend more than 3 secs looking at each painting, something I improved over the years: at least for a decent percentage of the them. The museum of natural history was also surreal, with all the world and different periods at one place. The giant whale in its own real size in the basement - wow! A kid in me who loves Jurassic Park / World movies really enjoyed the dinosaur section. But both MET and a museum of natural history had those miniature replicas of villages and towns showing how people used to live, or live even today: it was a great place/time travel. This is Melissa and this semester I will share this Introduction to Art class with you. 
I am pretty excited about this class as I always enjoyed art and aesthetic in general. I find myself interested in different kinds of arts. My firsts passions since I was a child were dance and theater, but I also am into home design and decoration. Being from Belgium in Europe, I had the opportunity to visit a lot of beautiful places and museums that I truly enjoyed, like the Louvre in Paris, the Loire valley castles or the Keukenhof Gardens in Holland. Now, I am a New York City resident which is one of the greatest place for art as well. I got to visit MoMa and the American Museum of Natural History but I am happy to be part  of this class that will give us the opportunity to visit and find out about more interesting places. I hope we will have a great semester together!

My name is Gary Dusek. I am a multi-disciplined artist and designer originally from California. I have many varied interests which express themselves in my work. I have returned to school after a long hiatus to hone my existing skills and make my experiences more cohesive in their manifestations. I am exited to get back to basics and see art through a novice perception.
