The neighborhood of Chelsea has been characterized by
radical changes that have occurred in history being its most positive change
now as a New York's premier contemporary-art district. I really do not remember
seeing so many galleries in the past since I used to work in this sector at 29 St.
exactly in 2003. The only part that I remember because of my job is that the
best dealers of cars in New York are in that area. Yes, for me Chelsea
was the beginning of a dream. I say dream because I used to work in the
Manhattan Porsche and for me those cars are part of the expression of the art
of the engineers and driving 350000 dollars’ car was a dream fulfilled even
though it wasn’t mine. Another part that I remember about Chelsea and it was
very important in my life is the day when a heroic pilot decided to land in the
Hudson River to save the lives of many people. I was just passing through the
area and witness so important event.
First, I went to De Buck Gallery with solo exhibition by
New York based artist Rashad
Newsome. Entitled Stop playing in my face! This exhibition was about collages and
videos that offer commentary through the lenses of black and queer subcultures,
Rashad Newsome utilizes his artwork as a means to explore the concept of
intersectionality in numerous permutations. The collages evolve from abstracted
Baroque- esque designs that incorporate symbols of these subcultures with
clearly recognizable human faces and bodies. Compositionally, these works are
still heavily influenced by Newsome’s interest in the rules of heraldry and the
use of contemporary pop culture status symbols.
Secondly,
I went to Klein Su Gallery with the exhibition “New
voices: a dslcollection story,”
Li Wei Hollow Man - Auditory Hallucination, 2008 Painted fiberglass 32 1/4 x 22 z 36 5/8 inches (82 x 56 x 93 cm) |
a group exhibition on view from May 7 through
June 18, 2016. “New voices: a dslcollection story,” features works by nine
artists: Chen Wei, Gao Lei, Gao Weigang, Hou Yong, Hu Weiyi, Li Wei, Wang
Yuyang, Wang Sishun and Zhao Zhao. Curated by Beili Wang, the exhibition is
inspired by the dslcollection, a body of work procured by Sylvain and Dominique
Levy that documents the multiple narratives of art and culture in contemporary
China. Thus, “New voices: a dslcollection story,” reveals the practice and
works of China’s youngest generation of artists, who have distinctly different
points of cultural and historical reference in comparison to their
predecessors. Within this boundless sphere, they create alien works that are
transcendent of the notion of contemporary, translating their identities into a
new autonomous language. Using new materials and concepts, these artists and
their works are pushing Chinese contemporary art to unchartered territories,
and because of that, their works are of higher value than any previous
generation of Chinese artists.

In conclusion, my return to college
it has been the most fantastic thing that it is happening to me because of how
we can see the world from a universal perspective. When we are not studying
our mind is definitely limited. I want to thank Professor
Dahlia for teaching a new language, a new form of communication, a new way of
seeing the world through art.
I was so sad I didn't take a photo of that "surreal woman" in first gallery and I can't believe you did it! Saved on my laptop. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you returned to an "old" neighborhood and experienced it in a different way!
